Mei & Kenji Tanaka
Bilingual couple based in Thailand — experienced with dogs, cats, and the logistics of tropical pet care
What We Say
Mei and Kenji fill a genuine gap in Southeast Asian housesitting: a reliable, communicative couple who understand the specific challenges of tropical pet care — heat management, monsoon routines, the particularities of rescue animals in the region. Mei's daily photo diaries are a standout feature that hosts consistently mention, and Kenji's calm temperament with nervous animals has been praised in nearly every review. Their bilingual skills are a practical advantage for Japanese-speaking hosts across the region.

About Mei
We moved from Osaka to Chiang Mai in 2021, drawn by the creative community and the cost of living that lets us work less and live more. Housesitting found us through a friend's recommendation — her regular sitters cancelled last minute and she needed someone to look after her three rescue dogs for a week. That week changed everything.
Southeast Asia has a huge expat pet community, and many of those pets are rescues with complex histories. We've sat with dogs who were terrified of men (Kenji won them over with patience and distance), cats who'd survived on the streets and couldn't adjust to indoors, and a blind Labrador in Bali who navigated entirely by scent and routine.
Mei is the communicator — she sends daily photo diaries that hosts say are the highlight of their trip. Kenji is the quiet one the animals gravitate towards. Between us, we speak English, Japanese, and enough Thai to handle a vet visit.
Experience
Mei volunteered at a dog rescue in Chiang Mai for three years before they started housesitting, and is experienced with anxious, traumatised, and reactive rescue dogs. Kenji grew up with cats in Osaka and handles multi-cat households with confidence. Together they have cared for dogs, cats, chickens, fish, and a tortoise across Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
About Kenji
Kenji teaches Japanese online to students across three time zones, which means he's almost always home. Animals trust him instinctively — he's patient, gentle, and happy to sit on the floor for an hour waiting for a nervous cat to approach. His students have learned to expect occasional dog cameos during lessons.
